Here is a step by step guide on how to start your child reading and ensure that practice is continued.
- Download the app and sit with your child to make a profile. Let them choose their favourite Bookbot as their avatar.
- Help your child to choose a starting level. Try reading some of the examples.
- Scroll through the newly created library and read out some of the titles. Try to guess what the book might be about.
- Let your child choose a book. Listen to your child repeat the practice words in the book.
- Read through the book together. Let your child navigate as much as possible and rate the book at the end.
- Set a reading goal with your child. Ask them what they would like to achieve by using Bookbot. There are some example goals if you both get stuck. Or try the 5 day challenge. Write down the goal on a piece of paper.
- Decide together how many times a week your child will need to read to achieve their goal. Be realistic. Lives are busy. Three to four times a week is enough to promote improvement.
- Stick it up somewhere that it will be seen often (the fridge works well).
- When your child reads, put a sticker on the chart, or tick it off.
- Then make sure you deliver a reward when the chart is full or the goal has been reached. The reward can be as simple as choosing what the family has for dinner, or a physical reward such as a small gift.
